Research

X Height:
Fig 2.1.2 17/10/2022, Week 8)

the x-height, or corpus size, is the distance between the baseline and the mean line of lowercase letters in a typeface. Typically, this is the height of the letter x in the font (the source of the term), as well as the letters v, w, and z.

Cap Height:Cap height is the height of a typeface's uppercase letters, measured from the baseline to the top of flat-topped glyphs. This is usually slightly lower than the ascender height, and cap height can vary between typefaces.

Ascender and descender:

Fig 2.1.3 17/10/2022, Week 8)

So, what is the definition of an ascender in typography? Simply put, an ascender is anything extending above the x-height in a lowercase letter. Think about the letter “h”, “d” or “b” for instance, the lines reaching upwards are the ascenders.

Every Typeface have a specific “x height”, the central height for all of the main components of the characters. This x-height is what makes a piece of text look uniform. However, it’s possible to break outside of the x-height in some instances of logo design.

The x-height or baseline of a typography is the consistent line you should be looking at to create a sense of consistency in your design.

The concept of ascenders in typography actually dates back a lot further than most people realise, to Greek scripts and fonts. The length and style of an ascender can make a significant difference to the legibility and aesthetic of a kind of font.

Font type and Typography Rules to Follow:

 Fig 2.2.1 17/10/2022, Week 8)

In order to understand the basics, it’s important to learn typography rules that will guide you as you improve your design. The five principle of design or any other type of graphic design that every designer should know are:

  • Balance that conveys a consistent structure
  • Hierarchy that defines organization and direction
  • Contrast to emphasize highlights
  • Repetition to create consistency and familiarity
  • Alignment to present a sharp and structured image

In addition to this list, layout, white space and color are essential elements of typography basics. It’s important to look at the shapes created by the words and letters. Challenge your brain to look beyond what the word “says” and more closely at how it “looks.”

White space is used as a print and web design strategy to make text look less busy and more pleasing to the eye. It’s important to have a comfortable balance between the text and graphics and the empty aka white space of the blank background.

Font Deconstuction

Fig 2.4.1 17/10/2022, Week 8)
My conclusion while deconstructing and tying to analyse the font are lowercase font still complicated to me to understand, so i tried to analyse the uppercase letter and find out the cap height, The font that i use for deconstructing in uppercase is univers std roman

Sketch/First Draft

Fig 2.4.1 17/10/2022, Week 8)
After mr vinod give feedback about my font, i decided to use the N in the 4th sketch because he said that it has an interesting shape. Here's the shape that will be the base of my design
Fig 2.4.2 17/10/2022, Week 8)

so i used it on M and T first and i adjust it to others these was my first attempt constructing the font
The first attempt Fig 2.5.1 24/10/2022, Week 9)
I explore the shape further more and these were my adobe Illustrator progress
Trying to construct the letter in ai (Fig 2.6.1 24/10/2022, Week 9)
First Attempt (Fig 2.6.2 24/10/2022, Week 9)
In this one almost everything is awkward and weird and need more adjustment so i made a new one before week 10
Second Attempt (Fig 2.7.1 31/10/2022, Week 10)
In the second attempt Mr Vinod gave me a feedback about the font, The M,N is great the A is okay the rest is need more adjustment and the hashtag also needs to be changed.
Third Attempt (Fig 2.8.1 07/11/2022, Week 11)
Everything is fine in the third attempt except the red letter and punctuation and with a little bit of adjustment at glyphs i managed to make the final one

Glyphs Process
At first i'm using FontLab but what i didn't realise that i've already used the fontlab trial in this laptop before so i'm thinking using an alternative solution, so i used glyphs trial version first for this assignment here's the process

Kerning Process (Fig 2.9.2 07/11/2022, Week 11)

This is the font after going trough glyps kerning and exported to .tff

  • FINAL OUTCOME
Ascender: 735pt
Cap height: 679pt
X height: 500pt
Baseline: 000pt
Descender: -225pt

PDF (Fig 2.10.1 07/11/2022, Week 11)

After that Mr Vinod said that we need to make a poster from our font, we can use little bit of shape and stuff but keep it grayscale, so here's my poster result

  • FINAL POSTER

FEEDBACK

Week 10: Specific feedback: the N and the M is great but the rest of it 's still need soe adjustment but overall the font was consistent

General feedback: Always be consistent especially in the baseline and the hashtag also needs to be slanted

Week 11: Specific feedback: Mr Vinod said it was an interesting typeface but the KGY ! ,. need's more work

REFLECTIONS

Experience:
I love this task especially when trying to construct the letter but it still make me confused how to make it precise and consistent but i think i managed to do it quite well although maybe not good as others and messed up a little bit but this task opened my mind how to explore the shape.

Observations:
when constructing my letter form i must make it consistent because that's how to make a good typeform, also when kern i want to make it more nice to see and the spacing not ot far and not to close to each other

Findings:
The main things that i found is how can we made a font that nice to see and nice to read there's many aspects that must be presented and executed well.

Combining Typefaces: Free guide to great typography
By Tim Brown (Head of Typography for Adobe Typekit & Adobe Type.)

So the next thing i read anatomy in this book because it's made me related to this task, The first thing i learned is there's many type of classification, families, and jobs. Classifications make it more organised but the thing is, it's still confusing because of subjective they are. Jobs is organised by what they used for. So after reading this i concluded that every font has their own usage and type.
